☀ Spring-ing ☂

Just returned from a few months of living, working, bike-riding, pub-dwelling and lamb-viewing amongst the green valleys of England. Now starting my second spring back in Montreal, where magnolias are popping all over again.

All to say: I’ve had a great couple of months and have worked on some nice projects. There’s a few new things to see here, here and here.

Also, Starting from Scratch (published by Owl Kids) is now available in stores! I feel really happy with how it all came together – Sarah Elton provided a brilliant manuscript to work with and I had the chance to work the insightful John Crossingham as editor once again.

Hope you’re enjoying this new season.

♡ ♥ Valentine’s Eve ♥ ♡

I just finished work on a small piece of printed matter with John Latour. It will be part of his upcoming exhibition The Past Is a Foreign Country & The Chair Test at Harcourt House in Edmonton this March. JP King of Paper Pusher worked his risograph magic for us: teal ink on a warm, 60lb kraft stock. Yum!

The Chair Test

Also hot off the press: a catalogue for this year’s MFA program at Concordia University entitled Open Doors / Portes Ouverts. Karin Zuppiger is the true mastermind behind the publication – I just set up a grid and taught her some fancy keyboard shortcuts.

✭ Happy Two-Thousand-Fourteen! ✭

Out with the old, in with the new, y’know? On that note, here’s some New News. About books.

Robot Feels Sleepy is part of the World Book Design exhibition at the Printing Museum, Tokyo. The show runs until March 2.

Learn to Speak Film, the final installment in the award-winning series from Owlkids is now available in stores.

This past fall I finished the design and illustrations for another title from Owlkids, Starting From Scratch: What You Should Know About Food and Cooking. It will be available in March of this year.

The double-volume edition of The Cave Painter and The Woodcutter published by Playwrights Canada Press was recognized by Quill & Quire as one of the top 5 jacket designs for 2013. Thanks!

C’est tout pour l’instant. Hope your newest year is off to a good start.

My friend Karin and I are turning her front window into a little gallery for a few weeks. I’m making some little sculptures out of wood and plasticine.

TRYS is pleased to present L u c k y   B r e a k, a solo exhibition of sculptural work from Jeff Kulak.

On display in a street-level window frame, clunky geometric forms, polychromatic surfaces and plasticine figures pit playfulness and joy against uncertainty and despair.

Jeff Kulak is a graphic designer and illustrator based in Montreal.

A vernissage will be held Sunday, November 17 at 4pm. Note that this is an outdoor event, so please dress warm. Hot beverages and snacks will be provided.

This will be the inaugural exhibit by TRYS, a cultural production group facilitating art in itinerant spaces.
